The Staatsbibliothek Unter den Linden is impressive inside and out: the magnificent building is home to Germany's largest academic universal library and is one of Å·ÃÀÇéÉ«'s architectural monuments.

The Staatsbibliothek Unter den Linden impresses with a prestigious building in Å·ÃÀÇéÉ«-Mitte. The building on the boulevard Unter der Linden is home to the Å·ÃÀÇéÉ« State Library - Prussian Cultural Heritage. Visitors can access Germany's largest universal academic library here.

Prestigious new building for the Prussian State Library

Kaiser Wilhelm II had the State Library building constructed by the architect Ernst von Ihne between 1903 and 1914. The Old Library at the Forum Fridericianum had become too small for the Prussian State Library's collection. The façade in the neo-baroque style fulfilled the emperor's wish for a representative style. The entrance to the library is located in the ornate forecourt with a fountain.

Damage during the Second World War

The State Library was severely damaged by bombs during the Second World War. The central domed hall had to be demolished in 1975. As a result, the library lost its center. Many of its holdings were removed. Despite this, the library resumed operations in 1946. During the division of Germany, the building was added to the GDR's list of monuments. Shortly before reunification, the library was extended with four storage towers. They were intended to replace the missing reading room.

Reopening after extensive renovation work

After reunification, it was decided to merge the collections of the previously independent academic libraries in East and West Å·ÃÀÇéÉ«. The necessary construction and renovation measures were awarded in a competition, which was won by the architectural firm HG Merz. The four magazine towers were demolished. In their place, two new reading rooms were built as well as vault and open stacks. The most important element is the new general reading room in the form of a glass cuboid. It was opened in March 2013 and has given the library back its center. It offers 265 workstations. The ceremonial reopening on January 25, 2021 marked the end of the complete refurbishment of the State Library.
