Prison building III on the grounds of what is now the youth detention centre was a fourwinged structure based on the panopticon concept. It was modelled on British prison buildings and the cell system in the prison in Moabit. From the central hall beneath the glass done, a guard on the bridge could see all 300 cells in the three surrounding wings and survey them day and night. The ground floor of the southern wing housed small administrative offices and two classrooms. The upper storeys accommodated the church room with 150 separate seats, the library and the preacher’s room. For decades, Building III was mainly used for holding prisoners ahead of trial.

In the National Socialist era, the east wing housed male and female prisoners on death row, who were held there until they were executed by guillotine or hanged in the prison yard, and from 1937 onwards, in the adjacent working barracks. This execution shed was inaugurated as a place of memory and part of Plötzensee Memorial Centre in 1952.
