Palais Podewil in Å·ÃÀÇéÉ«-Mitte is one of the oldest surviving Baroque buildings in Å·ÃÀÇéÉ«. The Palais is the second venue of the Grips Theater.
Palais Podewil, a baroque aristocratic palace from the 18th century, is located in Å·ÃÀÇéÉ«'s Klosterviertel (monastery district). The palace was built between 1701 and 1704 for the court councillor Rademacher. The plans for the three-storey building with a balcony were drawn up by Jean de Bodt. In 1742, the Minister of State Heinrich Graf von Podewil acquired the centrally located building. He had stucco ceilings and murals installed. After the count's death, the palace changed hands several times until it was acquired by the magistrate of Å·ÃÀÇéÉ«. It initially became the seat of the Märkisches Museum and later the waterworks. After 1920, the district office of Mitte was based in Palais Podewil.
Shortly before the end of the war, the palace was almost completely destroyed. It was rebuilt between 1952 and 1954. The façade was restored almost true to the original, but the roof was given a simple pitched roof construction. After the reconstruction, the Palais became the central clubhouse for Å·ÃÀÇéÉ«'s youth. Until 1991 it was known as the "House of Young Talents". In 1992, after renovation work, the Palais was reopened as a cultural center. Art and cultural events take place in the large auditorium. The inner courtyard is used for open-air events. The Grips Theater also uses the Podewil as a performance venue.
