Located in the heart of Museum Island, the Alte Nationalgalerie displays one of the most important collections of 19th century art in Germany.

Alte Nationalgalerie

The Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery) was built from 1866 to 1876 according to plans by Friedrich August Stüler. It is considered one of the most important museum architectures of the 19th century. After an extensive restoration phase, it was reopened in 2001 in new splendor. The Alte Nationalgalerie is part and principal building of the Nationalgalerie, which also includes the Neue Nationalgalerie and the Hamburger Bahnhof.

Alte Nationalgalerie: Collection highlights

As one of the most important German collections of 19th century art, the Alte Nationalgalerie exhibits masterpieces by Caspar David Friedrich, Adolph Menzel, Sabine Lepsius, Franz von Stuck, Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir and Auguste Rodin, among others. Highlights include Caspar David Friedrich's "The Monk by the Sea" (1808-1810), Sabine Lepsius' "Self-Portrait" (1885), Auguste Rodin's "The Thinker" (1881-83) and Edouard Manet's "In the Conservatory" (1878/79).
